Our Vision The City of Laguna Niguel is dedicated to preserving a safe, flourishing and community-oriented environment through thoughtful engagement, financial responsibility and a commitment to innovation. This approach has resulted in a resolution of the problems caused by residents of the homes with the residents being more sensitive to the living conditions of the surrounding neighborhood. The courts have held that the Federal Fair Housing Act and Americans with Disabilities Act prevent cities from prohibiting such facilities.

Sober living programs and halfway houses in California are similar in that they provide substance-free accommodation for persons recovering from substance misuse. They both aim to take off the pressures that could occur from a home environment by gently reintroducing its residents back to society to avoid a relapse. At Purpose House Sober Living we offer a sober living environment where residents may grow as individuals while being a part of a larger family in recovery. A safe space to practice and apply the 12-Step program while enjoying the fulfillment of being productive members of society. Living in a sober living home compared to the inpatient facility is typically cheaper because the staff provides fewer services. Although treatment services will still be extended such as recovery meetings and sessions with a therapist, treatment will no longer be significantly intensive. Returning home after undergoing intensive treatment can seem daunting, especially if you have an unstable home environment.

Others may have relapsed after treatment and therefore feel the need for increased support for abstinence. However, they may want to avoid the level of commitment involved in reentering a formal treatment program. Sober living houses are alcohol and drug free living environments that offer peer support for recovery outside the context of treatment. ORS is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program located in Berkeley, California that treats approximately 800 clients per year. Most of the clients are low income and many have history of being homeless at some point in their lives. Because a large number do not have a stable living environment that supports abstinence from alcohol and drugs, ORS developed SLHs where clients can live while they attend the outpatient program.

Residents usually sign a contract or written agreement outlining all of the rules and regulations of living at the sober living home. Sober living homes are known for strictly enforcing rules, and violations usually result in eviction.

It also provides a safe environment for its residents to address their addiction problems, overcome trauma, and rebuild their lives. California sober living homes are residences that provide drug-free and alcohol-free housing for a community of people in recovery. The support model at these homes is informal, and residents do not typically get professional services from the sober living home directly. Participants were interviewed within their first week of entering a sober living house and again at 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow up. Often the structure and routine of treatment programs help keep folks sober, and risking the loss of that when completing the program can be a threat to your recovery. In addition to studying a larger number of offenders, we hope to explore an innovative intervention designed to improve outcomes for these residents in terms of employment, arrests, and other areas. Our intervention modifies motivational interviewing to address the specific needs of the offender population . Specifically, it helps residents resolve their mixed feelings (i.e., ambivalence) about living in the SLH and engaging in other community based services. Thus, the intervention is a way to help them prepare for the challenges and recognize the potential benefits of new activities and experiences. These measures were taken from the Important People Instrument (Zywiak, et al., 2002). The instrument allows participants to identify up to 12 important people in his or her network whom they have had contact with in the past six months.

From people in active recovery to advocates who have lost loved ones to the devastating disease of addiction, our community understands the struggle and provides guidance born of personal experience. While living in a sober living home, residents have the chance to cohabitate with like-minded individuals all doing their best to hold on to sobriety. City staff continues to monitor sober living homes in Laguna Niguel and responds to calls for service. The City also continues to monitor the enactment of ordinances and resulting litigation in Orange County cities as well as State legislation that pertains to the authority of the City to regulate such facilities. Furthermore, a resident may stay or leave a sober living home at will as there is no compulsory length of stay. In a halfway house, the residents may have a mandatory stay period.

Residents in a California sober living home may still be attending an outpatient program or a 12-step meeting. Living in a house where people are drinking or using drugs is a temptation no one fresh out of an inpatient facility should have to face.
